Southwest Airlines Adding Washington, D.C. Service at Akron-Canton Airport – Southwest Airlines announced on March 25 that Akron-Canton would be among 14 airports that will gain flights to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Plans are for Southwest to add two daily flights between Akron-Canton and Reagan National on November 2, 2014. Southwest’s announcement comes during a campaign—dubbed #LUVCAK—aimed at steering local residents toward the airline’s website when making travel arrangements. The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce, the Stark Development Board and the convention and visitors bureaus in Stark and Summit counties are leading the campaign with hopes of keeping Southwest flights at Akron-Canton. Southwest bought out AirTran Airlines, the airport’s largest carrier, two years ago. Southwest is in the process of finishing work to integrate all of AirTran’s service into its business. The new flights to Washington, D.C. compliment Southwest’s current nonstop service from CAK to Atlanta, Denver, New York (Laguardia), Boston, Orlando, Tampa and Ft. Myers.
